Intership proposals

Noise of crumpled paper - At the cinema, at the theater, or at the concert, haven't you ever been bothered by the noise of crumpled paper, so particular and so intense that it can blur the listening and distract the artists? But how can such a small leaf make so much noise? The purpose of this internship is to attempt to elucidate this question. The sheet of paper, or the plastic or metallic film in question, is an elastic plate whose thickness is very small compared to its other dimensions. When this plate is strongly deformed, plastic defects are created and disappear emitting a characteristic noise. This complex phenomenon combines the nonlinear deformation of the plate, the propagation of elastic waves in the plate and the acoustic radiation in the air. During this internship, we will study these different mechanisms with increasing complexity.

We are looking for a student motivated by experiments and signal analysis. Knowledge in acoustics and plate vibrations would be an asset. During this internship, the student will acquire experimental and theoretical skills in acoustics, vibrations and elasticity through the assembly of experiments, the acquisition of signals and their analysis.

The internship will take place at the Institut d'Alembert at Sorbonne Université (Paris). It will be supervised by Régis Wunenburger (Institut d'Alembert, Sorbonne Université) and Adrien Bussonnière (MSC laboratory, Université de Paris).
